I am expecting that you are the kind of person who if going to buy a new car does more than say, “oh it’s red I like red I will have that one”.
The next step is another that is often overlooked, but it is really important also. Every one of us have our own standards of integrity, and guess what, yours are unique to you. So here is mo0re homework for you. Think about the people in your life who have qualities that you admire, start with people you know, it may be your parents, teachers, close friends or colleagues. List them then think about your heroes from history and the present. Once your list is complete go back through and by the person’s name write down what qualities you admire about the person. That might be one quality or there may be a few qualities a person has.
Once you have done that read through the list of qualities, one at a time. It might be that a quality appears more than one on your list if it does highlight it. Even if a quality only appears once check in by asking yourself how this quality makes you feel? Does it resonate with you, does it make your heart sing, give you a warm fuzzy feeling? If so highlight it.
Once you have done that you have identified qualities and traits that are really important to you. Extract from your list the underlined qualities. These are things you cherish and are things that you need to be able to express in life to bring you happiness and contentment. As your job/career is such a big part of your life it is important for you incorporate as much of those values as possible in your working life.
I know this all sounds really simple stuff and you might be thinking, this is too easy or you might be thinking this is so simple why the heck didn’t I think of it myself. Rather than getting bogged down with the whys and the what fors take a little time to consider it, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It will reveal far more about you than maybe you had even considered before.
